Jobs to Be Done (JTBD)
Jobs to Be Done (JTBD) is a lens that frames products around the progress a user is trying to make in a given situation — the "job" they hire a product to do — rather than around demographics or features.
Popularized by Clayton Christensen and further developed by practitioners such as Bob Moesta, JTBD shifts the question from "who is the user" to "what job is the user hiring this for." The same person hires different products for different jobs depending on context.
Framing work as jobs keeps teams focused on the underlying need, which is more stable than any specific feature, and helps separate real demand from feature requests.
A commuter does not want "a podcast app"; the job is "help me make my commute feel productive." That framing changes which features actually matter.
ArcPM uses jobs and user needs to pressure-test requirements — distinguishing genuine demand from feature requests — so the requirements that reach the PRD are the ones that serve a real job.
